The garden will be gasping for water now, especially pots, baskets and containers so be up with the dawn chorus to quench their thirst. It’s always better to use grey recycled water or rainwater from a water butt if possible. There are also many cheap irrigation systems available, or DIY ideas online to help out. If you have a greenhouse, try capillary matting with our reservoir which provides water economically to the roots of plants.

There is always pruning to be done, even in the heat of summer. Now is a good time to prune Wisteria in preparation for a burst of blooms next year. Along with wisteria, rambling roses can be pruned and to keep those gorgeous flowers coming ensure you deadhead other garden roses. I always leave some roses that produce gorgeous hips because of their winter interest and for wildlife to enjoy.

Pruning and deadheading roses is a necessity but try not to deadhead roses that bear hips. They are an essential source of food for birds over the winter months and provide some beautiful interest in the garden when colour is sparse over the cooler months.
