Supports will be needed for many climbing fruit and vegetables and it’s always best to put them in place before the plants are too tall. Why not be creative with supports, use bamboo canes in fun ways, even old bike wheels provide a great climbing frame as tendrils of legumes find their way around the spokes.
It’s a busy month in the greenhouse as tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, chillies and much more need potting up and watering. Don’t forget to open the door on warmer days to allow good airflow and you may even find the bees pollinating your plants. Make sure to keep your water reservoir filled to help minimise the need for watering, using the capillary matting, on which the pots stand, to draw up the water. The roots will draw up the water from the matting, meaning less need for you to water.
May is a great month to take soft tip cuttings, which is a great way to get more plants for free! Try taking a cutting from a healthy Fuchsia with a new growing tip and at least two pairs of leaves below. Remove the lower leaves and pop the cutting into a mix of compost and vermiculite.
