If ever there was a time to get some air, perhaps it’s December! We love being outside absorbed in the hope of spring and getting vitamin D in the summer, clearing up in autumn but the December festivities often take over as the weather gets chilly, rainy and in many places, snowy! Don’t forget the Rhino Greenhouse is a great reason to still get outside in the garden and a superb place to over winter some of your plants.
From autumn sown cut flowers such as sweet peas, to tender perennials and even houseplants your greenhouse can be a place of sanctuary for you and your plants during winter.
Make sure the greenhouse is well cleaned by scrubbing in all of the nooks and crannies, making sure the glass is clean so as much light can get to your plants and if needed, when temperatures drop really low, you can even use horticultural fleece or bubble wrap to warm up the greenhouse even more. If you have plants that need an extra boost there are greenhouse heaters as well.
As I am away from my Rhino Greenhouse at the moment, I went to see the McMillan Greenhouse at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte to see what they are growing and overwintering. Beautiful Orchids, plenty of Cacti and all the houseplants you can think of! Plus there was a bonus display of Carnivorous plants which can be kept in a greenhouse in the UK.
So, if you’ve kept your houseplants outside in the summer and now don’t have room inside, they can go in a warm greenhouse as can Cacti getting too big for inside and any other plant needing some over winter protection. A great excuse to get outside and potter in the garden throughout December.
